Muscle Car of the Week: 1968 Ford Mustang GT500KR

If your kids are into muscle cars they probably know the '68 GT500KR as "Eleanor." Like it or not in their eyes this American beauty is forever linked with Nic Cage. For those of us who could care less about "Gone in 60 Seconds" the '68 will forever be known as King of the Road, because that is what KR stands for and because that is what it was.

Shelby quoted the horsepower output of the big 7L Cobra Jet engine at 335bhp. This was of course a big fat lie dished out to lower insurance costs. If you hook a King of the Road up for a dyno run you'll see numbers closer to 450bhp.

933 GT500KR Fastbacks were produced and 318 convertibles. This is one of the most powerful and popular Mustangs of all-time. It isn't difficult to find aftermarket parts for most Mustangs. However, this one deserves to be all original and good luck with that. This rumbling piece of perfection is best kept on your muscle car restoration wish list unless you're one of the very rare enthusiasts with the finances to pull off the dream of dreams.
