Muscle Car of the Week: 1970 Buick GSX

The muscle car era was about keeping up with the Jones'. In 1970, Pontiac had the formidable Judge GTO and Oldsmobile had the 4-4-2. Buick answered with the GSX. Available in two colors, yellow and white the GSX had something wicked under the hood. A 455 V8 that produced 510-lb.ft. of torque at 2,800 rpm. No American car produced a higher torque rating until the 2003 Dodge Viper! The powerful Stage 1 engine upgrade advertised 350 horsepower. This was a lowball number Buick used to play it safe in the brochure. The true number was north of 400 bhp!

Accurately restoring a GSX can be a bit tricky. Less than 700 were produced in 1970. Like many muscle car classics the GSX gained true popularity in later years. This led to a flood of clone parts, so you'll have to be really careful about obtaining documentation and doing your homework.

But, in the end you'll have a beautiful ride that is very popular at auction and at the GS Nationals. A muscle car monster that weighs nearly 4000 lbs and was once the quickest production car in America.
